Synthetic Lubricants and Alpha Olefins: A Perfect Industrial Match

Alpha olefins are a group of organic compounds classified as alkenes, which are hydrocarbons containing at least one carbon-carbon double bond. What makes alpha olefins unique is the position of this double bond — it is located between the first and second carbon atoms in the molecule’s chain. This specific structure gives alpha olefins distinct chemical properties, making them highly valuable as building blocks in various industrial applications.


The primary method of producing alpha olefins is through the oligomerization of ethylene, a process that links ethylene molecules to form longer-chain olefins. The most widely used commercial technology for this is the Shell Higher Olefin Process (SHOP). Other production techniques include thermal cracking of waxes and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.


Alpha olefins usually come as mixtures of even-numbered carbon chains, ranging from four carbons (butene-1) up to 30 or more. Key alpha olefins such as butene-1, hexene-1, octene-1, and decene-1 have different industrial uses. For example, butene-1 and hexene-1 are commonly used as comonomers in the manufacture of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), which improves the plastic’s strength and flexibility. Octene-1 is similarly used in producing specialty polyethylene with enhanced performance characteristics.


One of the largest applications for alpha olefins is in synthetic lubricants. Higher carbon alpha olefins, like decene-1, are polymerized to create polyalphaolefins (PAOs), which serve as base oils in synthetic motor oils. PAOs are valued for their excellent thermal stability, low volatility, and superior lubrication over a broad temperature range.

Alpha olefins are also essential in making detergents, surfactants, plasticizers, and chemicals used in oilfield applications. In the detergent industry, alpha olefins are converted into linear alkylbenzene (LAB), a crucial ingredient in biodegradable household cleaning products.


Due to their wide-ranging uses, the global alpha olefins market is experiencing steady growth. Increasing demand for plastics, growing automotive production, and expanding use of synthetic lubricants are key factors driving market expansion.
